Cast and Crew

Melanie Jordan – Co-Director

Melanie is a director, performer and theatre maker based in Glasgow, creating work in theatres and on the streets which is visually driven, physically dynamic and exposes our shared humanity with curiosity and humour. As co-Artistic Director of multi award winning physical theatre company Jordan & Skinner she is a fellow with the Barbican and ArtWorks Alliance. Trained at Queen Margaret University and Ècole Philippe Gaulier in Paris, she is the resident Physical Theatre Practitioner with Surge and co-founder of Scotland’s Clown Cabaret.

Melanie teaches clown and physical theatre across Scotland and internationally.

Credits include A Brief History of the Fragile Male Ego by Jordan & Skinner, Valentina’s Galaxy by Frozen Charlotte, At A Stretch by Jordan & Skinner (Three Weeks Editors’ Award winner), Flutter by Tortoise in a Nutshell, Sanitise by Jordan & Skinner (Fringe First Award winner), Selkie by Kay Singh (David MacLennan Award winner).

Her favourite thing to do in the garden is practise circus tricks on her washing line pole, and mostly fall on to the grass!

Douglas Irvine – Co-Director

Douglas is a founding member, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Visible Fictions. He has directed, written, adpated and performed in many of the company’s productions as well as creating work for other companies in Scotland and abroad. Most recently he has co-created and directed ‘The Hidden’ – an interactive theatrical experience in libraries; has directed and adapted ‘A Ladder to the Stars’ – a puppet production recently returned from being presented in Singapore; and has directed the stop-frame animation ‘Papergee and the Spider’ – currently being presented at various film festivals acorss the world.

His favourite thing to do in the garden is picking blackcurrants on a lovely sunny day – especially when you put one in your mouth for each one you put in the bowl!

Ronan McMahon – Performer

Ronan is a performer, musician, and community artist. Credits include Blue Man Group, White by Catherine Wheels and Christmas at the Circus with Elie Street Productions / Cumbernauld Theatre. He devised and performed in A Ladder to the Stars, also by Visible Fictions, on tour in Scotland and as part of the Theatre in Schools Scotland programme. He is a member of Sprog Rock, a music gig experience for 0-5s and their accompanying adults, produced by Starcatchers. As part of the creative partnership Two Detectives with Naomi O Kelly, he creates and performs clown performances and interactive theatre experiences for family audiences. In Spring 2020 he will be touring with a new show, Very Mild Peril, by Two Detectives as part of The Puppet Animation Festival.

His favourite thing to do in the garden is play fetch with Hanna, his sister’s dog.

Caroline Mathison – Performer

Caroline trained at ALRA, London, and has performed all over the UK, and internationally, with a variety of stage and screen experience. Caroline is also a comedy improviser: a core member of improv group, To Be Continued, and a regular guest performer with the Spontaneous Players.

Caroline is an associate artist with Eco Drama, with whom she has co-devised and performed several productions for nursery and primary aged children, including The Worm – An Underground Adventure.

She hopes to carve out a niche in invertebrate roles, maybe one day making it all the way to squid.

Caroline is delighted to be working with Visible Fictions, and glad for this unique opportunity to understand slug behaviour having recently acquired a garden (although sadly devoid of juicy veg).

Caroline’s favourite thing to do in the garden is commune with squirrels. Sorry slugs, they’re just fluffier.

Ashley Smith – Performer / Musician

Ashley trained at the RCS (secretly known as the Royal Conservatoire of Slugs) She has toured Scotland and the world with theatre shows since then waiting for the chance to put her slug knowledge to good use and now the time has come! This is the first show she has played music for and she feels pleased to have been ‘instrumental’ in the creation of Slug!

She has performed in family shows since graduating predominently with Catherine Wheels Theatre Company, she is the ghostly voice of the childrens tour on glasgow city buses and she has been one of the regular police faces in Bafta award winning comedy Scot Squad for all 5 series.

Sam Ramsay – Stage Manager

Sam has worked extensively in Scottish theatre as a Stage and Production Manager. Most recently on productions including Playful Tiger for Barrowland Ballet, This Girl Laughs for Stellar Quines, The Return for Eden Court, Jason and the Argonauts for Visible Fictions, Faslane by Jenna Watt and Showroom, Glasgow Girls for Pachahmama, Right Now for the Traverse Theatre, Not About Heroes for Eden Court and The Straw Chair for Borderline along with various productions for the Tron Theatre, RCS and The Breakfast Plays for Traverse Theatre during the Edinburgh Festival. She has also Stage Managed the Pantomime at The Byre Theatre for the past 7 years.

She doesn’t have a garden but spends most of her summer as Festival Manager for Bard in the Botanics. Which basically means for the last 11 years Glasgow Botanic Gardens has been her slug hunting ground.

Claire Ferguson – Deputy Stage Manager

Originally from Sydney, Australia Claire Ferguson is now a Glasgow based Stage manager, Writer and emerging theatre maker. In 2017, Claire graduated from Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Communications Theatre/Media (with Distinction).

Her management Credits include- “Mr Melancholy” by Matt Cameron (Bathurst Arts Theatrical Society 2016), “The Fox” By Ben Jonson (Cycle Productions 2017), “Anything to Declare?” By Claire Ferguson (Sprung Festival 2017) , “You Got Older” By Clare Barron (Mad March Hare 2018), “Whose Uterus is it Anyway?” By Georgie Adamson (Bite Productions 2018), “Boy out of the Country” by Felix Nobis (Company of Rogues 2018) and the Australian premiere of Stef Smith’s “Girl in The Machine” (National Theatre of Parramatta 2019). Making the move to the UK this year to work at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe, Claire is excited to be working with her first Scottish theatre company.

Her favourite thing to do in the garden is sit in the sun and have a nice cup of tea.

Kenny Miller – Designer

Kenny Miller is a freelance designer (and director) who was for many years Head of Design / Associate Director at the Citizens’ Theatre, Glasgow and is currently Associate Artist: Designer for the Sherman Theatre, Cymru.

He has worked in Theatre and Opera both nationally and internationally, designing and directing for many companies such as: Royal Court Theatre, London; Royal Shakespeare Company; Oxford Stage Company; Hampstead Theatre; Theatre Royal Stratford East; Palace Theatre Watford; Greenwich Theatre; Bush Theatre, Donmar Warehouse; Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh; Oldham Coliseum Theatre and Dundee Rep Theatre.

He has won three Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland for: Scrooge (Best Production); Smoking With Lulu (Best Technical) and A Little Bit of Ruff (Best Ensemble). He has also won the Manchester Evening News Award for 10 Rillington Place (Best Designed Production).

Davy Cunningham – Lighting Designer

Davy Cunningham has been a freelance Lighting Designer since 1985. He has lit more than 300 productions, of which roughly 200 were operas and 100 plays, in 26 countries and more than 100 theatres. Recent operas include Strauss’s Die Fledermaus for Deutsche Oper Berlin, Pucinni’s Turandot and Franco Faccio’s Hamlet for Bregenz Festival, Austria. Recent work in drama has includedThe Hanging Gardens by Frank McGuinness at the Abbey Theatre, and Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People at the Gate in Dublin. He doesn’t have a garden. When he had a garden, he liked to lie in the sun and listen to birdsong.

Alan Penman – Composer

Alan Penman writes music for theatre and television and actually gets paid money to do this.

He has written loads of songs and musicals for children and young people and has his own YouTube channel called Choonbaboon where you can listen to some of his music and decide whether it’s any good.

He likes to grow vegetables in his garden.

Last year, he grew 3 tiny beetroot, 2 microscopic carrots and 12 very small peas.

Alan is not a very good gardener.

But thankfully he’s quite good at music.He doesn’t have a garden. When he had a garden, he liked to lie in the sun and listen to birdsong.
