Fair Work

We are nothing without the people who work with us.

Visible Fictions is committed to the Scottish Government’s Fair Work First policy. As an accredited Scottish Living Wage employer we place the working conditions and well-being of our staff at the centre of what we do. Working with our teams of employees, creatives, and artists we strive to make sure everyone we work with is supported, heard, included and empowered.

Visible Fictions acknowledges that staff are having to deal with increasing pressures out with work, the cost of living crisis, caring responsibilities, climate change, the continued effect of Covid 19 and as such we have put the following Fair Work principles in place and will continue to review and renew these commitments regularly.

Effective Voice

Visible Fictions provide channels for effective employee engagement and holds 1-to-1 meetings, appraisals, and a full team meeting once a week. All staff are briefed on the Company Handbook which is regularly reviewed. We have yearly away days, team socials and an annual staff and Board dinner to promote collegiality and strengthen communications. During productions, freelance creatives and artists take part in regular meetings where senior management of Visible Fictions are also present. These meetings are places where individual voices are empowered and heard.

Fulfilment

Staff are encouraged to work across departments, collaborative working is very important in our organisations culture. As such, staff are sharing and learning skills continuously. Our ambitious artistic output is created collaboratively and the sharing of ideas, skills and processes is at the heart of that work. The advancement of our team is very important to us and we strive to provide opportunities for staff to further their learning.

Opportunity

Visible Fictions undertake a fair and transparent recruitment process with job opportunities advertised externally. We invest in training for all our staff focusing on organisational priorities and individual personal development. At Board Level we have an EDI Champion and a dedicated training budget. We regularly support school, college, university and professional development placements to help those who are keen to learn more about our field of expertise.

Security

Visible Fictions offer flexible working hours, hybrid and home working to help employees gain and maintain a good work/life balance. Visible Fictions is an accredited Scottish Living Wage employer and is committed to paying the Real Living Wage. Our salaries are regularly reviewed and we benchmark against other similar sized organisations. We do not use, or issue zero-hour contracts and oppose the use of fire and rehire practice. We pay our freelance team promptly and ensure they are fully briefed on the Company Handbook. All freelance staff are either contracted or issued with a letter of agreement which clearly sets out what is expected of them during their employment and, as importantly, what they can expect of us. We are members of the Independent Theatre Council and have earned Ethical Manager Status within it. We never employ people as volunteers.

Respect

All Visible Fictions staff, freelancers and board members are entitled to be treated with respect and dignity at work and have a personal responsibility for ensuring that they treat others the way in which they would expect to be treated. We recognise dignity at work to mean being free to work without experiencing, bullying, harassment, discrimination or victimisation. The health and well- being of our staff is very important to us and we have a Mental Health First Aider in our company who is available to all permanent and freelance staff. We aim to provide more well-being based initiatives such as Mental Health Check in Sessions and a Well Being Time which staff can take off after busy periods of work which does not affect their holiday or time off in lieu entitlement.
